There isn’t necessarily a sport that is specifically associated with “anorexia athletica” although gymnasts, figure skaters and long distance runners tend to be most affected.
Anorexia athletica refers to a condition where athletes excessively focus on exercise and restricting food intake to maintain a low body weight or achieve a certain performance goal within their sport not understanding the dynamics that poor fueling with food actually results in poor performance and NOT better performance.
Symptoms might include excessive exercise, obsession with body weight or shape, strict dietary rules, and physical complications like fatigue, dehydration or stress fractures to name a few.
Treatment is really no different than any other eating disorder we may treat in our practice. We would provide nutrition therapy to clients struggling with anorexia athletica by prescribing meal guides, breaking down rules and beliefs around food and exercise, ensure they are fueling appropriately for their sport and working alongside their support system and team of other professionals such as therapists, doctors, coaches, parents, etc.
We are in-network with many insurance companies. Insurance-based nutrition counseling is based on your insurance provider’s approval and specific insurance plan. We can only provide services based on what they allow, following their specific guidelines. Such perimeters include:
