All symptoms in females apply to males. Eating disorders do not discriminate!
These can include, rapid weight loss, obsessive calorie counting, avoidance of certain foods, excessive exercise, food rituals, eating slowly, moving food around on plates, compulsive exercise, prioritizing exercise over other activities, preoccupation with body image, isolation from friends and family, depression, anxiety, and the list goes on.
It’s common! Although it’s under diagnosed for males which makes us sad. Factors for under diagnosis include stereotypes about this being a “female” disease, social stigma, and reluctance of men to seek help for mental health issues.
Numerous things can contribute to this which includes underlying issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, low self esteem, perfectionism, pressure to achieve a certain body type and cultural attitudes around masculinity and food.
