Anorexia in Pregnancy Complications

Anorexia in pregnancy can lead to a variety of complications for not only the mom, but also the baby. This can include nutritional deficiencies, low birth weight, premature birth, development issues, and maternal health complications. Mothers-to-be that are struggling with anorexia really need support asap.

How does nutrition during pregnancy affect the baby?

Poor nutrition during pregnancy can affect the baby in many ways, things may include fetal growth and development, birth weight, immune system, brain development and can result in overall long term health complications like risk of chronic diseases later on in life such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Anorexia in Pregnancy Treatment

The main goal is ensuring the mom-to-be is getting adequate nutrition to support her needs and the growing babies requirements. In addition, we want to focus on decreasing eating disorder behaviors that are causing harm to both the mother and her unborn baby. While pregnancy is a beautiful thing, it can be rather stressful for a mom and her unborn baby when struggling with anorexia. Early intervention is key.

Does insurance cover nutrition therapy for anorexia?

We are in-network with many insurance companies. Insurance-based nutrition counseling is based on your insurance provider’s approval and specific insurance plan. We can only provide services based on what they allow, following their specific guidelines. Such perimeters include:

  • Limitations in visits
  • Requiring a certain amount of time in between appointments
  • No additional support between appointments
  • Check your medical nutrition therapy benefits here.

While nutritional counseling can be beneficial for various conditions, we find that, specifically for those suffering from disordered eating, continuous support and ongoing accountability is the game changer in achieving recovery.

We believe that full recovery is possible with the right support and treatment. We look forward to being part of your healing process.
