Eating Disorders in the LGBTQIA+ Populations

Eating Disorders in the LGBTQIA+ Populations

Eating disorders don’t discriminate—they affect people of all identities, backgrounds, and body types. But for LGBTQ+ youth, the risk is often higher and more complex.  LGBTQ+ youth need care that goes beyond treating symptoms. Treatment needs to recognize and respect their lived experiences. As dietitians, we have a powerful role to play in offering that kind of support.

Are LGBTQ kids at a higher risk of developing disordered eating or eating disorders?

Higher Risk, Greater Need

We know from research (NEDA) that LGBTQ+ youth are two to four times more likely to develop eating disorders than their cisgender, heterosexual peers. That’s not because of who they are—it’s because of the pressures they face.

Chronic stress from stigma, discrimination, and rejection plays a big role. So do cultural expectations around appearance, both in society and sometimes within LGBTQ+ communities. Add in higher rates of anxiety, depression, and trauma, and the risk grows.

Why Getting Help Can Be Harder

Too often, LGBTQ+ youth face barriers that delay or prevent treatment:

  • Fear of judgment or misunderstanding in healthcare settings
  • A shortage of affirming providers who understand their lived experiences
  • Financial and insurance-related challenges
  • A lack of representation in research and treatment models

These obstacles can lead to delayed care and poorer outcomes. But with the right support, recovery is absolutely possible.

How can a dietitian help?

As registered dietitians, we’re here to offer safe, inclusive care for every person who walks through our doors. For LGBTQ+ youth, that means:

  • A weight-neutral approach that focuses on health and healing—not appearance
  • A judgment-free space to talk about food, body image, and identity
  • Personalized nutrition support that includes meal planning, education, and close collaboration with therapists and medical providers

Our team of dietitians receives advocacy training to identify and address the special requirements of LGBTQ+ young patients.
