Are gymnasts at a higher risk for eating disorders?

Yes! Gymnasts are at a higher risk of developing eating disorders compared to the real population and even athletes in other sports. Such risk factor is include emphasis on aesthetics and body shape, weight categories and pressures to remain thin, early specialization where they start to train to at a very early age, performance and personally pressures with an emphasis on perfectionism with their routines, in addition to their coaches teaching styles that may put emphasis on weight, food and body size.

What are the signs of anorexia, bulimia, BED, OSFED in gymnasts?

Signs may include but are not limited to rapid weight loss, obsession with weight, unhealthy eating patterns, eating large amounts of food in one sitting, purging behaviors, mood swings, avoidance of social situations, secretive eating, performance decline and wearing baggy clothes to name a few.

Not to mention, we want to work with the athletes coach to educate them on signs and symptoms of the eating disorder acting up and how to support their athlete through recovery to continue to prioritize health and wellbeing over weight and performance.
