What are symptoms and signs of bulimia nervosa?

The biggest sign of bulimia nervosa is recurrent episodes of eating large amounts of food over a short period of time (bingeing) and unhealthy compensatory behaviors. Other signs include peculiar eating habits or rituals, body dysmorphia (a distorted body image), an intense fear of gaining weight, emotional distress and feelings of guilt and shame associated with the bingeing and compensatory behaviors, anxiety, a sore or inflamed throat, dental problems due to the erosion of the enamel, and lowered energy levels.

Awareness is the first step toward healing.

Who is most at risk of developing bulimia nervosa?

Eating disorders do not discriminate. Nevertheless, evidence shows that adolescent females are more at risk for developing bulimia nervosa. Other risk factors include having a family history of eating disorders and mental health illness, substance abuse, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders. Another risk-factor is chronic dieting.

We are a weight-inclusive, non-diet dietitian team in the St Louis area, working with patients online or in-person in our Illinois and Missouri offices. We are ready to help you or your loved one to heal from their eating disorder.

What can a dietitian nutritionist do for bulimia nervosa?

We provide eating disorder care for everyBODY.

A dietitian nutritionist is a fundamental piece of your recovery team. As expert eating disorder dietitians in the St. Louis area, we work with patients to guide them toward healing their relationship with food and body. We offer virtual nutrition counseling, or face-to-face appointments in our Illinois and Missouri offices.

Here’s what you can expect:

Assessment and Individualized Planning

We assess your diet, eating behaviors, and triggers. Many with bulimia nervosa have nutrient deficiencies because of inadequate intake of food or purging behaviors. Medical Nutrition Therapy can help address these deficiencies through individualized diet plans and, if necessary, supplementation.

Normalization of Eating Patterns

One of the primary goals is to establish regular and balanced eating patterns. This may involve structured meal plans with adequate energy intake to support physical health and recovery.

Nutritional Education

Nutrition education is a big part of our recovery program. Teaching about healthy eating habits and the role of different nutrients in the body is crucial. This can help you develop a better understanding of your nutritional needs and fosters a positive relationship with food. Food is neither an enemy or a reward. It simply is.

Ongoing Support

Ongoing support is essential throughout the treatment process. This may include regular check-ins with your ED dietitian to track progress, address challenges, and make any necessary adjustments to the nutrition plan. We recommend our ongoing recovery coaching

Meal Planning and Food Challenges

For anyone struggling with bulimia, meals, grocery shopping, and food can be overwhelming. Meal planning and exposure to feared foods or situations are often incorporated into treatment to help you overcome restrictive or binge-purge behaviors and develop a more flexible and balanced approach to eating.

Collaboration with Other Treatment Providers

We work closely with your interdisciplinary team of therapists, psychiatrists, and other members of the treatment team to ensure a coordinated approach to care. This may involve sharing progress reports, coordinating interventions, and addressing any underlying psychological issues that contribute to disordered eating behaviors.

Long-Term Maintenance and Relapse Prevention

MNT also focuses on long-term maintenance and relapse prevention strategies to help you sustain recovery and avoid returning to disordered eating patterns.

Restore Your Relationship with Food and Body

Sustainable recovery depends on a healthy relationship with food and body, sustainable habits, and ongoing support through your recovery process. We provide resources, group therapy sessions, and continued support to ensure you stay healthy!

How much does medical nutrition therapy cost for bulimia nervosa?

We are in-network with many insurance companies. Insurance-based nutrition counseling for bulimia nervosa is based on your insurance provider’s approval and specific insurance plan. We can only provide services based on what they allow, following their specific guidelines. Such perimeters include:

  • Limitations in visits
  • Requiring a certain amount of time in between appointments
  • No additional support between appointments
  • Check your medical nutrition therapy benefits here.

While nutritional counseling can be beneficial for various conditions, we find that, specifically for those suffering from disordered eating, continuous support and ongoing accountability is the game changer in achieving recovery.

We also provide affordable, self-pay options. We believe that full recovery is possible with the right support and treatment. We look forward to being part of your healing process.

Our Testimonials

Thank you for choosing us as the Best Dietitian Practice in STL (2023)

by H, Illinois

Talking about food and eating behaviors can be very vulnerable—much like discussing any other mental health concern—and it makes a huge difference to work with people who meet you with kindness and zero judgment. The team at Branz truly makes people feel supported. They’re not there to lecture or shame; they’re there to help.

by T, Saint Louis, MO

Wasn’t expecting that response, you are the first dietitian that looked at the good and not my one bad day.

by E, Saint Louis, MO

Thanks for helping me think about food differently and providing guidance regarding how to select carbs. Also, thanks for helping me recognize that the evolution would take several months to come to a ‘new normal’.

by C, Saint Louis, MO

I truly appreciate the encouragement and hearfelt, genuine concern you have for me. Your counsel and empathy have meant a great deal and helped keep me going during difficult times.

“For most of my life, I have correlated the size of my body to being loved and accepted. The smaller I am, the more lovable and acceptable I am. Giving up the dieting, the rules, and the noise has given me the freedom to trust, appreciate and accept love from others as well as myself”.

by Mother of a Patient, Saint Louis, MO

I am truly grateful we found you to be he nutritionist. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

by Mother of a Patient, Saint Louis, MO

Thank you for the caring devoted service and gentle compassion you have shown “S” over the years.

by Mother of a Patient

I can’t thank you enough for all you have done for us. I know we will continue to deal with food issues but at least I see hope. I honestly don’t know how L(or myself) could have got through the past year without you. You literally are a lifesaver!! You are an amazing dietitian!!.

by Mother of a Patient, Saint Louis, MO

Also, again, thank you for being so kind to “A”. She usually does not like seeing “doctor like people”, but she actually enjoys coming to see you, so that says a lot.
