Understand IBS, SIBO, and Leaky Gut

Digestive health problems affect millions of Americans. They are responsible for more hospitalizations than any other disorder.  Some of the most common disorders include:

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder characterized by gut pain or discomfort, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, and/or alternating episodes of both diarrhea and constipation. The cause of IBS is unknown, but symptoms can be triggered by certain foods, stress, and hormonal changes.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO):  SIBO is a condition where excessive bacteria grow in the small intestine causing bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, gas, and, in severe cases, malnutrition. SIBO interferes with nutrient absorption and digestion.

Leaky GutOur intestines have a degree of permeability, which is normal. Leaky gut occurs when the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged. Undigested food particles, toxins, and bacteria "leak" into the bloodstream. Symptoms include bloating, gas, cramps, food sensitivities, fatigue, headaches, joint pain, and skin issues.

Gut health affects everything, from our mood (learn about the gut-brain axis!) and skin health to our nutrition status. One of the dietitians on our team can provide online or in-person medical nutrition therapy to help you implement an individualized diet plan to improve your digestive health and wellness. It's not uncommon for people who struggle with digestive health to develop disordered eating. As expert ED dietitians, we will work to help you implement healthy eating behaviors, improving your relationship with food and body.

What foods are best for gut health?

This is a loaded question, however it can include foods that are rich in fiber, have pro and prebiotics, and antioxidant rich foods such as Omega 3 fatty acids. In the same breath, we still want to work on incorporating a variety of food groups that contribute to feeling satiety and not deprived at the same time.

How to improve gut health naturally?

It’s about finding the balance of what foods work well with your gut and what foods increase inflammation. No two people are the same on this and our medical nutrition therapy is individualized to your needs.
